Becoming Familiar with Pet Vaccines

Some pet vaccines are widely considered essential for long-term pet health. Core vaccines are those that are commonly recommended for all pets, regardless of how much time they spend outside or around other animals. Essential core vaccines for dogs protect against canine distemper, parvovirus, rabies, and hepatitis. For cats, the core vaccines protect against feline distemper, rabies, and feline viral rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, and panleukopenia (FVRCP). If pets are exposed to unvaccinated feral animals, your veterinarian may recommend additional protection.

The Best Time to Vaccinate Your Pet

Young animals are protected from illnesses early on due to the antibodies and nutrients that pass through the mother’s milk while nursing. This helps them get through one of the most vulnerable periods of their life. Once nursing stops, however, their immune systems are almost instantly more susceptible to life-threatening illnesses. Routine pet vaccinations start when pets are six to eight weeks old and continue throughout their lives to make up for this lack of immunity. Fourteen days after vaccination, pets have full preventative protection from relevant illnesses. In order to maintain immunity, booster doses may be required every six months to three years, depending on the vaccine. Your veterinarian at Pet Doctor of Chandler will ensure that your pet is set up with a healthy vaccination schedule

These recommendations are usually only considered if your cat is at a high risk of exposure.

How Do Vaccines Work?

Pet vaccines work by protecting your pet against diseases. We administer a low dose of the pathogen in a vaccine to allow your pet’s immune system to fight the pathogens. An animal does not possess immunity when a virus or bacteria enters its body, so a vaccine helps the body manufacture antibodies to fight.
